The city of Ferizaj is located in the south of Kosovo, on the Fushė Kosovė Plain. The plain is framed by the dramatic Sharr Mountains in the west and hills rich with minerals in the east. The river Nerodima is running from the Sharr Mountains and ends close to the town Ferizaj in a bifurcation. In this the Nerodima splits into two rivers, the Lepenac flowing south into the Aegean Sea and the Sitnica flowing north into the Black Sea. Kosovos main north-south transport arteries, the M2 road and the railway line between the capital Prishtina and Skopje in Macedonia are crossing the municipality. The railway is running through the city centre, cutting the town in two halves. Even though the conflict in the 1990s brought much destruction to Ferizaj, a mosque and an orthodox church next to each other in the centre are evidence of cohabitation in the past and bring hope for the future.
The municipality has many potentials for development: fertile agricultural soils, beautiful mountains and a favourable location for trade. The different uses are though often competing about the same land. The Municipal Development Plan (MDP) is trying to combine the different uses and to minimize the conflicts. Priority areas for agriculture, exploitation of natural resources and nature protection are defined. Trade is concentrated to the town Ferizaj. The town is connected to the beautiful Sharr Mountains with a recreational axis in the Nerodima Valley. The Nerodima bifurcation is included in this axis.
The Urban Development Plan (UDP) is trying to minimize the urban sprawl and concentrates the development to the urban zone. All important public and cultural functions are located to the city centre around the central station and an inner city boulevard. Trade is promoted in commercial areas along the M2 road. The disperse areas within the urban zone are densified and abandoned military areas are redeveloped.
